We must prepare for growth. Ignoring what we know is coming turns opportunities into problems.
I found on the State’s website some interesting statistics. For the last ten years there have been twice as many births than deaths in Larimer County. That is good news. We are living longer. But it shows that even if it were possible to build a big wall around the County to keep people from moving in, we would still grow… and we need to be ready.
Preparing for growth is not the same as promoting growth. Buying a burial plot does not lead to death.
What’s necessary to prepare? First, we need vision and leadership. What do we want Larimer County to look like in 20 or 50 or 100 years? For sure, it will not look like Larimer County today. Second, we need to balance future revenues and expenses. This requires setting priorities. Finally, we need to anticipate infrastructure needs. The big issues are water storage and roads.
We enjoy a fine quality of life. As a father of four, I want my kids when they are grown to enjoy it, too.
