There are two areas where County Commissioner leadership is needed in the area of transportation: road and bridge maintenance, and creating a Regional Transportation Authority.
One of the pillars in my plan to improve the budget process is to consider total lifecycle cost. What can appear in the short term as a cost cutting measure can increase expenses over the long haul.
Our county roads and bridges require maintenance. If we do not perform this maintenance, we will soon have to replace them. That is much more expensive in the long run.
In the 2008 budget, road maintenance was very nearly eliminated. As County Commissioner, I will work to assure wise use of tax dollars.
The other immediate transportation priority I see is creating a Regional Transportation Authority. We have large unfunded needs and the State is not going to come to our rescue.
New leadership is needed. Your County Commissioners need to step forward to reignite the process of finding regional solutions to our regional problems.
